Summary

The emperor's reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order。 But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire's many islands。

Lin is the emperor's daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets。 When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic。

Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright - and save her people。

This book really does keep you reading。 I usually take my time with books but I breezed through this in a handful of days, it was hard to put down。 The magic system is really clever and effectively draws you further into the plot。 It was one of the things I was most impressed with。 The two main characters we follow, Lin and Jovis, are interesting in different but complimentary ways, where one is more adventure and the other more mystery and political intrigue。 Often one of their chapters ends an This book really does keep you reading。 I usually take my time with books but I breezed through this in a handful of days, it was hard to put down。 The magic system is really clever and effectively draws you further into the plot。 It was one of the things I was most impressed with。 The two main characters we follow, Lin and Jovis, are interesting in different but complimentary ways, where one is more adventure and the other more mystery and political intrigue。 Often one of their chapters ends and you want to see what happens next, so you keep reading to get back to that POV but then you get hooked on others along the way and before you know it, you've breezed through 100 pages in one sitting。 。。。more

I love this book。 The storyline was amazing and even though the chapters switched between people I never felt like I wanted to skip anyones chapter。 And the storyline and magic was mystifying。 THE WAY THE STORIES MERGED TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! WHY IS BAYAN DEADThis is an outrage。 He deserved so much better the poor boy was beaten by his own creator and was lied to his whole life。 He wasnt even fully his own person, he was made to be Shiyen。 Imagine someone coming to your door telling you that you arent even a real person。 You're a creation。 You're an experiment。 My prediction is that he isnt even dead。 What i mean is even though he is cleary dead, he will come back into the series。 He is a construct afterall。 Even though he might not get "fixed" there is still a high possibility。 Lin seemed to be implying that she would bring him back。。。but she took Thrana。 So i dont know im kind of all over the place。 And there is still the young Shiyen that floats in the mysterious memory pool thing。 Im not sure why but Chapter 41 really hit me。 Jovis had this unbreakable sense of hope and love for Emahla and for him to come to the realization she was gone and finally have the strand of hope broken。。。it broke me too。 And also while Jovis was slowly breaking and realizing what he has to do Mephi was there for him。 To have someone like Mephi, I cant even imagine。 It was a sense of loss and also extremely heartwarming。 Lets just say Chapter 41 was emotional。 OMG RANAMI AND PHALUE!! SO CUTE AHHHH! I was in tears when Phalue proposed at the end。 SHE SAID YES!!Their relationship overall was so real and I loved how the author showed us both sides of their relationship。 They were fighting so hard for each others love when they already had it。 Im not sure how I feel about the Malia island and all the people there。 Like how is Sand Nisong? I dont get it。 Sand mention she was ugly and Nisong mentioned how she had unremarkable beauty。 Those dont add up。 Does she think she is Nisong because thats who she was to become if Shiyen was to remake Nisong。 Im so confused。 And if she is Nisong that is going to cause so much chaos with Lin and the new empire they are already beginning to create。 LIN AND JOVIS! Im so happy they met each other and now are working with one another。 Well who knows whats going on with Jovis but he seems to actually want to help。 And what is he going to do when he finds out Lin PHYSICALLY has Emahla's eyes。 Its not Lins fault but still it must be hard to look into the eyes that once were his lovers。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

It took me forever to read this one because I found that the beginning and middle kind of dragged but the revelations at the end actually got me super pumped for the next one。。。

I enjoyed this book a lot。 A completely new magic system and intertwining stories。 And an underlying mystery that is slowly revealed。

Lucy

I really enjoyed this book! I went in not knowing what to expect but ended up finding a new favourite character (Mephi)。 I have preordered the sequel and am very excited to continue with the story <3

i enjoyed this book but its not one that is super memorable。 its just kind of bland - nothing really happens but at the same time a lot of things do? but they seem inconsequential in the long run?

I really enjoyed this。While this book has its flaws, it's still 5* for enjoyment。It's a fresh, innovative magic system set in an Asian-inspired world。 And has actual twists that I didn't see coming which, let's be honest, is rare! Oh, and cute sidekick creatures which, is the absolute best。Let's all advocate for more pet sidekicks right? Andrea Stewart goes for gold in a stunning fantasy debut。The Bone Shard Daughter follows the tale of an Empire toeing the line of prosperity and ruin。 The chapters alternate between five points of view, each character with their own place in the world。 Each character has their own motives and goals, trying their best to navigate their environment and find their place in their tale。 In a world with secretive and poorly understood magics, very little seems set in bone (。。。get it?)。 World building Andrea Stewart goes for gold in a stunning fantasy debut。The Bone Shard Daughter follows the tale of an Empire toeing the line of prosperity and ruin。 The chapters alternate between five points of view, each character with their own place in the world。 Each character has their own motives and goals, trying their best to navigate their environment and find their place in their tale。 In a world with secretive and poorly understood magics, very little seems set in bone (。。。get it?)。 World building in any fantasy novel is incredibly important, but sometimes it can feel like too much。 The world building in this was rich without feeling bogged down。 The mystery felt intriguing rather than careless。 My only true ask would have been for a map。 I think that would have helped make things even clearer, especially since each chapter listed where the character was at the time。I had my reservations with this book at first, especially when I realized that there were multiple points of view when the snippet on the back implies that this is one girl's story。 That reservation was quickly erased as I progressed into the book。 The end of each chapter had me wanting to read more, enveloping you in the individual stories。 Each cliffhanger chapter ending had me reading the next six chapters。 This is my fastest read so far this year and probably one of the fastest reads I've had in a very long time。 I didn't want to put it down。 Ultimately, I really enjoyed this book。 It's definitely near the top of my list for my 2021 reads thus far。 I've already recommended it a few times, and started doing so even before I finished it。 I eagerly await the next book! 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest reviewI hadn't heard much about this book before I went into it, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! Overall decent story, interesting premise。 Narration is split across too many characters, though it's not hard to follow。 Will give the next book a try when it comes out。 Overall decent story, interesting premise。 Narration is split across too many characters, though it's not hard to follow。 Will give the next book a try when it comes out。 。。。more

Woooooooowwwww。 This book was incredible。 I haven't read a really really good book in a bit, but this book shattered that streak。 This book follows multiple POVs。 In this world, the emperor uses shards of children's scalps that they are required to "donate" to create constructs。 He etches commands onto these bone shards and inserts them into bodies of different animals that are assembled together。 We follow multiple people living in this harrowing world as they try to fight corruption。 I knew fr Woooooooowwwww。 This book was incredible。 I haven't read a really really good book in a bit, but this book shattered that streak。 This book follows multiple POVs。 In this world, the emperor uses shards of children's scalps that they are required to "donate" to create constructs。 He etches commands onto these bone shards and inserts them into bodies of different animals that are assembled together。 We follow multiple people living in this harrowing world as they try to fight corruption。 I knew from the get go I would enjoy this book。 Within the first few chapters, I was already invested in the characters, and as I learned all of their stories I became even more engrossed。 The characters are all very different, but very relatable in different ways。 The whole story was unpredictable and exciting。 There was violence, romance, journeys, and heartbreak。 I can't believe this is a debut novel。 It is so well written and realized。 I know this review is a little vague but I don't want to spoil a single thing! This is what fantasy is all about。 Everyone interested in fantasy should definitely read this book! It was pretty good but it got confusing with all the different POVs。 It switched so often that I got mixed up and forgot random bits of information。

While some parts of this book were on the nose, it was refreshing to read an adult fantasy that felt genuinely optimistic。 Plus the bone shard magic itself was really cool。

5 BRIGHT YELLOW STARS TO THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTERAlthough the stories of Sand, Jovis, Phalue, Ranami and Lin ends on a cliffhanger, I am content with waiting because it will be well worth it。I thought a book from so many perspectives would be too scattered, but it was well formulated and flowed beautifully。 I formed an attachment to each individual, hoping for each one to do "a very good"。 The way their lives began to intertwine was when I couldn't put the book down。The magic, beasts and construc 5 BRIGHT YELLOW STARS TO THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTERAlthough the stories of Sand, Jovis, Phalue, Ranami and Lin ends on a cliffhanger, I am content with waiting because it will be well worth it。I thought a book from so many perspectives would be too scattered, but it was well formulated and flowed beautifully。 I formed an attachment to each individual, hoping for each one to do "a very good"。 The way their lives began to intertwine was when I couldn't put the book down。The magic, beasts and constructs were what sucked me in。 The concept of bone shard magic is brilliant and I hope to learn more when the story continues。 The story of Mephi, Jovis' pet, is curious and I can only guess what sort of creature he actually is。 The mysteries of magic that are unanswered still have me thinking about them。I can see myself rereading this fantasy before the next one is published, to make sure I didn't miss something or to pick up more details。I recommend this book to dark magic lovers and anyone that loves getting submerged in a world that is unlike their own。 。。。more
